Pharma Leads the Way in Help for Haiti

The drug industry is usually out front in assisting disaster relief, and many manufacturers have already come forth with major donations of money and supplies to Haiti in the aftermath of this week's earthquake.

Abbott will donate $1 million and says it has donated drugs that are already "on the ground" in Haiti.

Amgen has pledged $2 million

Eli Lilly has pledged $250,000 initially and will match that amount if its employees donate as well.

AstraZeneca has pitched in £100,000 as well as supplies and relief.

We expect more companies will make similar announcements in the coming days. Thanks to all for your individual and collective contributions.

One could say that supply chain security is the most critical issue facing drug manufacturers today—and perhaps facing our healthcare system as well. The supply chain is at the heart of healthcare’s greatest problems—drug counterfeiting and adulteration, shortages of key medicines, and of course escalating medical costs.
